17 Things to Make You Smile

Happy Sunday! I hope you are enjoying a great day full of Jesus and family. What do you typically do on a Sunday?

Today I wanted to brighten your spirits! We all need a reason to smile sometimes. We can all use a little happiness in our busy and often stressful lives. Sometimes we get caught up in the chaos and the problems in our lives and forget to be happy and to remember the little things. That’s why I wanted to share 17 simple and easy ways to get your smile front and center!

  1. Buy yourself a new lipstick- A new lipstick always brightens my day and brings a smile to my face. How about you?
  2. Take a moment and read a chapter of the Bible- I suggest any of the Psalms, Exodus 14, or a chapter in Matthew.
  3. Stop and look at the flowers…literally- Sometimes even a glance at something beautiful like flowers can cause a smile on a hard day.
  4. Write a kind note to someone else- Remember that we aren’t the only ones that have hard days. So to cause a smile, try giving someone else some kindness!
  5. Take a walk and see Gods creation- When life is stressful, go for a walk and take a look around at God’s brilliant and beautiful creation. It always makes me smile.
  6. Have a Netflix marathon of your favorite funny movie or show- There is nothing in life that a Psych marathon or a few episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond can’t fix. Grab a snack, a blanket, and a crack a smile while laughing and enjoying your favorite show.
  7. Buy yourself a new outfit- Sometimes we need to spoil ourselves, so when life is tough go buy a new outfit and smile—show the world you’re in control.
  8. Pay it forward- Buy someone’s coffee or lunch! Spread smiles and happiness to others even when life is hard for us.
  9. Create something- If you paint—paint. If you make cards—make a card. If you write—write! Create something and I bet you will smile.
  10. Read a new book- For me, reading a new book (or a classic favorite) always tends to put a smile on my face.
  11. Take some time to yourself- Go get a manicure, a massage, or go have lunch on your own. Take a few moments to yourself to gather your thoughts and to relax.
  12. Have a worship service in your room- For me, nothing makes me happier than a worship session alone in my car or my room. God’s presence never fails to put life in perspective.
  13. Drink out of a fancy glass- Maybe this won’t make everyone smile, but it does me! There is nothing better than sipping tea out of a fancy wine glass.
  14. Spend time with loved ones- Show your family some love. Crack some jokes and love on each other.
  15. Talk with an accent- Some of the biggest smiles happen because my sister and I talk in fake accents while doing housework.
  16. Be intentional- Smile by being intentional. Love others, be caring, and have fun in life.
  17. Order a Venti instead- treat yourself and order a big coffee on those crazy mornings and smile because at least you have coffee!

Those are just a few ideas of things to do to make you smile. There is always something to smile about even on our darkest days. Jesus is always a reason to smile and have hope. If you don’t know about Jesus or salvation, I’d love to talk to you about it!

What are a few things that make YOU smile?? Let me know in the comments!

He’s in the waiting

If you’ve been around W&W for a while, you’ll know I’ve been in about a year and a half long waiting season. Waiting for a job. Waiting for a husband. Waiting, waiting, waiting. I know this is something I speak of often, and for that I am sorry, but my goal with WW is to be honest and share what God is doing in my life. I have a feeling I’m not the only one waiting.

If I’m honest, this season has been lonely at times and there are moments when I feel like God has forgotten my requests and my future. I face interview after interview, and no after no. My student loans need to be paid and are a reminder of the degree that I paid for and have yet to use. It’s easy to begin to think that God has left me here to fend for myself. Satan loves to make us doubt Gods hand in our lives. He is quick to make us impatient, selfish, and bitter about the seasons that are rough or long.

As I listened to the song Take Courage by Bethel Music I was overcome with the truth of Gods promises. I was overwhelmed with His steadfast love to be with us in every season, including the waiting. It’s so easy to get so wrapped up in what we want for our lives and what we think we need that we forget that Gods plans and ways are higher. I might not want this season of waiting, but there’s a reason I am right where I am.

In those seasons of waiting, I think it is easy for us to feel abandoned and that God has sent us here as a punishment. If we are real with ourselves….we are angry about these seasons. But God is in the waiting. He is in the tears we cry, the prayers we shout, and the future we long for. I have to remind myself that every no might be keeping me from harm or a bad situation; maybe the no is leading me to an even greater yes. He will reveal all in His time. Just like the song says,

“Take courage my heart
Stay steadfast my soul
He’s in the waiting
He’s in the waiting
Hold onto your hope
As your triumph unfolds
He’s never failing
He’s never failing”

God doesn’t promise our lives will be easy but He does promise eternal victory and that we will never be alone. He doesn’t promise that our problems will go away but He does promise that He will help us face them. This song is such an encouragement to me. It was like it was written just for me. Songs let us speak what our hearts and minds often cannot.

We must have courage and hope during all seasons. even the lonely ones. He is in the waiting, the trials, the fear, and all seasons. Don’t let Satan steal your hope and your joy. He will reveal your future when it is His right timing. He fulfills His promises we just have to hold on. He is faithful to finish what He started, we just have to have courage and patience.

Hold on friends, God is there.

5 songs for the mourning

I’m sure we have all heard about the tragedy that shook Manchester England. I am honestly just broken and overwhelmed at the thought of innocent lives being once again shed and taken.

I know it is hard to understand tragedies and death but I do know this: God is standing by us and holding us. My heart goes out to those poor families that have lost loved ones, friends that have lost friends, and people who had to witness death and carnage after such a fun night.

Today, instead of trying to put this sorrow into words…I am just going to share 5 songs that have brought me comfort in times of sorrow and mourning. God speaks through song and heartache. I pray that these songs will touch someone today and be just what you needed.

Blessings // Laura Story

“Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise”

Homesick // Mercy Me

“I close my eyes and I see your face
If home’s where my heart is then I’m out of place
Lord, won’t you give me strength to make it through somehow
I’ve never been more homesick than now”

Hold My Heart // Tenth Avenue North

“One tear in the dropping rain
One voice in a sea of pain
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One life is all I am
Right now I can barely stand
If You’re everything You say You are
Would You come close and hold my heart?”

There Will be a Day // Jeremy Camp

“There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
Will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we’ll hold on to you always”

Be Still my Soul (in You I rest) // Kari Jobe

“In You I rest, In You I found my hope.
In You I trust, You never let me go.
I place my life within Your hands alone.
Be still, my soul”
Today isn’t about finding the words but resting in His presence and I hope these songs will help.

My quiet, strong giant

As I walked down the hall of the ICU, the stark white walls and the screeches of shoes on the tile reminded me exactly where I was at the moment. I reached the door, sisters hand in mine as I watched my parents step to the bed of my comatose great aunt.

I had went most of my life without death hanging over my life, and suddenly I was about to lose the third person in less than a year. The monitor beeps brought me back from my memories to the situation at hand…we had to say goodbye.

I don’t deal with death, elderly, or hospitals very well. In fact, I had to force myself to stay planted in that room as I heard my dad say, “Hey Aunt Jocy, we came to see you. Christy is on your side there,”

Now, we have no way of knowing if she could hear us, but in case she could…my dad took the lead. “Here is Jordyn too, and Hilary is here Jocy. We love you,” my dad assured her.

It was in that moment, that I was reminded how incredible my dad is and will always be. He is my families quiet, but strong giant. His God given ability is to work with people, especially the elderly and sick, and make them feel loved and special.

He is an occupational therapist but so much more than that. Standing in that hospital room, saying goodbye, my dad (normally a very quiet man) stepped up and said what all of us needed to say but couldn’t.

I get my shyness mostly from my dad. We are both quiet, non-confrontational, and tend to sink into the background. But that day, I saw what my dad does best. He is our giant. He is our earthly stronghold. God blessed me with a quiet, strong giant of an earthly father.

He speaks up when necessary. He is level-headed (something He needs having spent most of his life with a wife and 2 daughters). He is strong when the situation calls for it and caring when he needs to be.

I was reminded how important his role is in my family. He works hard, probably too hard, for me, my sister, and mom; and still makes time to listen to my problems and help us say goodbye to family. He makes elderly feel cared for and important. He gives up his time to listen to their stories and take them dinner if they don’t have family.

Most of all his strong arms are always open and ready to take on the weight of my problems. He is a giant because he takes it all on and asks for nothing in return. He battles this world to bring us the best and treats us like royalty.

My quiet, strong giant is my dad. And I am forever grateful.

From the archives // 5 Songs for the Weary

One thing I love about music and worship is the fact that songs allow us to be refreshed, encouraged, and sit in Gods presence for a little bit. On our most weary days, God is there; and one way He can encourage us is speaking to us through a song.

Today I’m sharing 5 songs for the weary. These are ones that I clinge to when I’m just worn out and in need of Jesus’ strong presence. Word are powerful and sometimes certain worship songs are just exactly the words you needed to hear in that moment, these are those songs for me.

Impossible by Meredith Andrews

I stumbled upon this song on accident one day (well, not an accident, Jesus lead me to it I’m sure!). This song is all about reminding us that it’s impossible for God to fail; impossible for Him not to go before us.

In a world that constantly fails and let’s us down, knowing God never does is a huge comfort. I don’t think we dwell on that thought enough. On our weariest days, God is there and walking with us. No matter if we’re in the valley or high on the mountain God is there is nothing sweeter than that. Listen here.

“It’s impossible for You to fail me
There’s not a day that You won’t go before me
Even when I’m at the end, I will not forget
It’s impossible for You to fail.”

Find you on my knees by Kari Jobe

Kari Jobe is known for writing worship music that is for the broken and the hurting; music that encourages and uplifts. Find you on my knees is a song about finding God on our darkest days and in the weakest moments.

The Bible says that the Lord is closest to those with broken hearts. This song is a proclamation that we will find God no matter where we are; and sometimes where we need to be is on our knees at our end with nothing except for a longing with God. This song is incredibly powerful and anointed- I could talk about it for days. Sometimes all we have to offer God is our brokenness and that exactly what He wants. Listen here.

“But I will find you in the place I’m in,
Find you when I’m at my end,
Find you when there’s nothing left of me to offer you except for brokenness.”

Come to the River by Housefires II

When we’re weary, what we need to do is come drink from the river of life. We need to soak up Gods presence and love. Our soul needs to be filled with His word and His love. He is always ready to give us fulfillment we just need to com and receive.

Come to the River is a call for us to come to the river and take in what Jesus offers; for us to taste and see. So that our soul can rejoice and not be weary. Listen here.

“Those who are weary, those who are needy
Come receive
Come to the river, come to the river
Taste and see.”

Deeper by Meredith Andrews

Deeper is an upbeat and exciting song that is a call to rejoice in every situation. Our valleys will make us lift our eyes up, our sorrows make our joy grow deeper, and our our giants are calling out the fighter inside of us.

Even when we are worn out we don’t give up because even at rock bottom God is working and moving in our lives. He’s taking us deeper and our love for Him grow deeper every trial and valley. This song makes me want to dance and praise because it has such encouraging words in it that my weary heart needs to hear. Listen here.

“Thrown down but not defeated
I’m worn out but not giving up
I’ve hit ground but even at rock bottom
I’m just getting started, yea, I’m just getting started.”

Fighting for Me by Warr Acres

Restlessly. God is fighting for us relentlessly. Warr Acres writes such incredibly deep messages in their songs. This song is all about knowing that even when we feel the waves crash over us, Jesus is fighting for us. His love is chasing us.

When we are weary, it’s probably because  we’ve been trying to do and handle everything on our own.  But even in those moments when we get ourselves into those pits and swells: God never stops for fighting for us. There’s nothing more comforting. Listen here.

“Buried beneath the waves, my heart was fading                                                                 calling me from a grave, Your love was waiting                                                                 though I fight against You, You will never stop fighting for me. Relentlessly, Your love is chasing. “

What songs do you listen to when you are weary? I really encourage ya’ll to go listen to these!

OKC Bombing: Story of a Hero // From the Archives

IMG_4106 (2)

9:02. One minute changed Oklahoma. It’s a day we will never forget. April 19th will mark the 20th anniversary of the OKC Murrah Bombing. Like in any major tragedy, hero’s stepped up in Oklahoma’s greatest time of need. Fireman jumped into action, business offered services, and people gave their time. One of those was Allen Houck of OKC. He is now a retired fireman that still remembers the bombing like it was yesterday.

Allen said that his first thought was to “get the job done.” He knew that it was his duty to help in the recovery efforts. Allen, like so many, spent days working the bombing.

20 years later we still remember the ones we lost and the ones who scarified their time and energy to help.

Here is Allen’s story: https://soundcloud.com/hilaryparr2015/okc-bombing-story
