The books are better than movies, right? Isn’t that the old saying? I think everyone has their own preference on whether the books or the movies are better. While I am typically a girl who sees the beauty in both…I will admit there are a few things in the books I wish had made it to the movies, specifically Harry Potter scenes I wish had made it into the movies.
Harry Potter is good in all forms in my opinion. But I think most people can agree that there are some pretty incredible scenes that didn’t make the movie cut. I’ve been listening to the audible books and I found myself compiling a mental list of moments I wish had made it to the big screen. So naturally, I thought I’d share these moments with you guys! Let me know if you agree with my scenes and what scenes you would add to my list in the comments below.
10 Harry Potter scenes I wish made it into the movies

#1 Mrs. Weasley & Bill show up for the family day for Harry before the final task of the Triwizard Tournament // Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Right before Harry begins the third task of the TriWizard tournament, the champion’s families come to spend the day with them. In the book, it’s this really great moment where Harry is upset and lonely when he realizes it’s family day because he knows that he won’t have any family there. But when he walks into the room, Molly and Bill Weasley are there to celebrate him and spend the day with him. There is always this underlining theme that the Weasley’s consider Harry as their family but the books do a great job of showing it through moments like this.
#2 Dobby wearing lots of socks and tea cozies, receiving Ron’s Christmas sweater, and telling Harry to go save his “wheezy” // Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Honestly, there are numerous Dobby scenes that I wish were in the movies. He is a much better, more complex character than they show in the movies. He’s also in a lot more of the books than the movies. I would do a whole post on Dobby moments. But one of my favorites is Dobby through all of Goblet of fire. He is working at Hogwarts and now wears clothes since he is a free elf. He always has weird mismatched socks and multiple tea cozies…I would have loved to see this visually in the movies. But Ron even gives him his Christmas sweater- so adorable, right? But in the books, before the second task, Dobby is the whole who gives harry the gilliweed to help him breathe underwater. He keeps telling Harry he has to go find his “wheezy” which we know is Ron because he is in the lake as part of the task.
#3 Kreacher becoming a much kinder house-elf // Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
In the movies Kreacher is mostly seen as the irritating, hateful house-elf he is…however there is a point in Deathly Hallows that He and the trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) bond and he becomes a much kinder soul. It would get really complicated trying to explain why, but they come to this point where they begin to understand Kreacher better and Kreacher realizes they aren’t the enemy. He begins cleaning the house and interacting with them more. He begins making their meals and treating them, well, like family. It is a really sweet moment in the book. I don’t want to give too much away but I had to at least mention it!
#4 The whole scene in the hospital wing after the Deatheaters enter the castle through the vanishing cabinet // Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
There is an entire chunk of good storyline in Half-Blood Prince after the Deatheaters get into Hogwarts through the vanishing cabinet and Dumbledore dies. The Order and others gather in the hospital wing because Bill has been attacked by a Greyback the werewolf. Not only is the whole storyline of Bill being attacked cut out but the other conversations that take place in the hospital at the same time. Fleur shows her true love and devotion to Bill when she stands up and remains by his side when he has been badly injured, maimed, and will now have werewolf tendencies. Molly begins to see how much Fleur really cares for Bill at that moment. Besides that, you see the first real image of Tonk’s love for Lupin during that scene. It is the first time we are made aware of their relationship and they completely took it out of the movies. Well, their whole relationship is mostly out of the movies…but that is another conversation for another time. I think this more than any of the other Harry Potter scenes is actually really pivotal to the storyline.
#5 Lupin coming to Harry, Ron, and Hermione and telling them that Tonks is pregnant…then later asking Harry to be Teddy’s godfather // Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
As I stated before, most of the relationship between Tonks and Lupin is cut out of the movies so obviously, these scenes aren’t in the movies either. In Deathly Hallows, Lupin finds the trio a few times to check up with them and give them updates. There is a lot more info on these scenes than I can share in this small post but Lupin shares the news that Tonks is pregnant. He later comes back and tells them about the baby and asks Harry to be the Godfather. These are such sweet moments and Tonks and Lupin are one of my favorite couples so I love this expansion of their storyline. I wish it would have been included, even a tiny bit, in the movies.
Tonks and Lupin are one of my favorite couples so I love this expansion of their storyline .
#6 Aunt Petunia receiving the Howler // Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Aunt Petunia tries very hard to convince herself and everyone around her that she knows nothing of the Wizarding world. But the truth is, her sister was part of it, so as much as she tries to hide it, she knows some things about the world. And I think deep down she actually cared for her sister, although she had a horrible way of showing it. In Order of the Phoenix, Petunia receives a howler that shocks the whole house, her included. The howler reminds her of the pact or promise she made to keep Harry safe and allowing him to stay in their home. It is a big moment because it not only ties her to the Wizarding world but it also is one of the few times we see Petunia stand up to Vernon.
#7 Mr. Weasley & the boys getting stuck in the faux fireplace while picking up Harry for the Quidditch World Cup // Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
There are a few scenes that were left out of the movies that are just plain funny. When the Weasley’s try to go pick up Harry from the Dursleys for the World Cup…they use floo powder. Well, floo powder is used for fireplaces and the Dursleys fireplace has been boarded up so they get stuck in the wall. It becomes a huge mess and it is honestly just hilarious. It is a really lighthearted, funny moment but still one of my favorite Harry Potter scenes.
#8 Brandy cups hitting Uncle Vernon & Aunt Petunia in the face when they refuse to take them when Dumbledore used his wand to get them a drink when picking up Harry // Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
At the beginning of Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore comes to the Dursleys to pick up Harry. Of course, they are mortified because he wants to come in and chat. Dumbledore is throwing shade at them right and left, it is pretty humorous. But there is a moment when Dumbledore says since they aren’t offering him refreshments…he will get them some. So he uses his wand to bring out some brandy glasses and obviously they are floating around with magic. The Dursleys are determined not to take the drinks because they come from Dumbledore so they continually hit them in the head and slosh drink all over them trying to get them to take them. If that makes any sense at all. Maybe it is a “you have to be there” kind of moment. Go read it!
10 Harry Potter scenes I wish made it into the movies #harrypotter Share on X#9 When Molly tries to get rid of a boggart at Grimold place but gets overwhelmed when it shows her the dead bodies of all her family // Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
In Order of the Phoenix, when they are staying at Grimold place and cleaning it out they find a boggart in a drawer in one of the rooms. Rmember, a boggart shows you your biggest fear. Molly heads to take care of it and Harry eventually walks into the room where Molly is and sees her crying, sobbing really, on the ground and members of the Weasley family are dead on the floor. It switches…Ron, the twins, Bill, etc eventually it even shows Harry dead on the floor. It takes Harry a moment to realize that what he is seeing is Molly’s boggart. One reason I love this moment is we see just how much Molly cares for Harry. She truly sees him as another son. It is a really touching moment.
#10 The gang seeing Neville with his parents in the hospital wing // Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
If you have ever read Order of the Phoenix, you’ll know it is one of the movies that have the most missing. There are huge chunks of it that didn’t make it to the movies. One of which is when they’re visiting Mr. Weasley in the hospital after he was attacked at the Ministry. While they’re there, they run into Neville who is with his grandmother visiting his parents. Remember his parents were driven insane from the cruciatus curse by Bellatrix. I find this to be such an important moment. Because it’s the first time you really understand the tragedy of the Longbottom family. You see that it wasn’t just Harry that had lost his parents, Neville had as well. They might not have been physically dead but their minds were gone and they didn’t even recognize their own son. You get a glimpse into how hard Neville’s life really has been and still is. Seriously one of the saddest Harry potter scenes but still one that is so important.

YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! Honestly, I with they could’ve created the films exactly like the books, there’s so much they miss! It’ll be interesting to see if they ever make a tv series how much they’ll keep in then!

Ooh, I’d forgotten some of them! It’s been quite a while since I read the Harry Potter books. My 7yo has started to get into them but we’ve had to pause as they were getting a bit darker and he was maybe a little too young for them. I’ve been trying to read the Danish translations to practice my Danish skills – I’m still in Chapter 1 as it was taking me so long to get through it lol. I understood more words than I expected but still needed my phone or a dictionary in the other hand.

Totally agree with all of these, especially Lupin and Tonks’s relationship – there’s so much assumed knowledge in the films that people have read the books and can fill in the gaps!

I love this! I’ve not read the books for such a long time! It’s actually forgotten about a lot of the scenes you’ve mentioned. I watch the movies semi-regularly and always enjoy them, but they miss out so much from the books.

I re-read all of the books at the start of the year and had sooo many similar feelings to you. My biggest one is I wish they’d shown Harry saying goodbye to the Dursleys!

Definitely the scenes with Tonks needed fleshing out in the films – I loved her in the books

There are so many things the HP movies missed out. For instance, Peeves was quite a common character and he was hardly in any of the movies, in fact I only remember him in the first movie.
