Names of God: Yahweh Shalom

Yahweh Shalom: The Lord is Peace

Today we are looking at the name Yahweh Shalom which means the Lord is Peace. I wanted to go over this name because peace is something I really struggle with in my life. With an anxiety disorder, I rarely ever feel at peace. In fact, it’s only when I am connecting with God and staying in His presence do I ever feel real peace.

Peace is something that we rarely see in the world today. I believe that’s because we don’t understand that the only real peace we can find is through Jesus. He is our true peace.

We see Yahweh Shalom in the book of Judges in the Old Testament. The scripture is when Gideon built an altar and called it Yahweh Shalom. This is when Gideon is called by God.

But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. Judges 6:23-24

I think however that the idea of God as our peace is throughout the whole Bible. When Jesus calms the storm, He is the peace. When He is resurrected and goes to see His disciples, He brings them peace. The fact that God is peace is everywhere.

Not only can He calm the waves and seas, but He can give peace to our racing hearts and our anxious minds. I think peace is something I am constantly praying for because I have such an anxious mind. God is good and just like the scripture says…He is the God of peace.

As my family faces some very hard times, peace is something that I am really having to seek God to find. Nothing else on this offer can offer true peace like the God of peace can like Jesus. He came to be peace and He still is our peace. Our world is far from a peaceful place so I cling to Yahweh Shalom.
