Names of God: Jehovah-Jireh

Today in the Names of God series we are looking at the name Jehovah-Jireh. I had picked this name for this week before realizing exactly how much I needed to remember this name.

Jehovah-Jireh means “God will provide.” As I write this, I am completely at a loss for what to do moving forward. My family is facing a lot of hard things including low income and for me, possibly, no insurance. When my dad died, we lost the main income. I’m working to build my photography and blog business and my parents are lovingly helping support me as I work to build my dream.

Now I’m back to finding a full-time job because we need the money. I’m a planner and a control freak so not knowing what life will look like in four months is terrifying. We are having to rely on God more than we ever have before and this name is exactly what I need to remember.

Jehovah-Jireh || The Lord will Provide

Often, I try to provide for all my needs on my own. I only trust myself to get what I need because I don’t focus on the fact that God will provide all things we need. I could go completely grey if I sit and try to handle what our finances and life will be like but I am trying to choose to trust.

Jehovah-Jireh comes from Genesis 22. It was given by Abraham when God provided a ram for his offering. If you don’t know the story, God told Abraham to go and take his only son Isaac and sacrifice him as a burnt offering. Abraham did as God requested and went with Isaac to offer up the sacrifice. Abraham was going to sacrifice his only son for the Lord and right as he was going to do it; God stopped him and provided a ram for the burnt offering.

This obedience of Abraham showed God that everything Abraham had was His. He was willing to follow in faith even when he didn’t want to do it. Even when it meant giving up the one thing he loved the most. When God graciously provided the ram, Abraham called out to God calling him Jehovah-Jireh.

So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:14

Only God would place this name on my heart this week, the week when I need it most. I don’t like not knowing what is coming and how we will provide for our family and livelihood. But all I need to know is that God is the almighty provider. He will provide everything we need- maybe not everything we want. God knows what we need and when to provide it.

Are you in a position where you need to cling to Jehovah-Jireh? Maybe you lost a job, maybe you are still drowning under student loans, and maybe you just need to learn to solely trust God. I’m right there with ya, friend.

God is faithful to provide! When I think of Jehovah-Jireh I think of when He supplied manna from heaven. The Bible is full of moment after moment that God provided for His people. I am so thankful for a God like that.

Are you liking this series? I know it is helping me so much! I hope it is for you as well. Cling to the God who provides!
