17 Things to Make You Smile

Happy Sunday! I hope you are enjoying a great day full of Jesus and family. What do you typically do on a Sunday?

Today I wanted to brighten your spirits! We all need a reason to smile sometimes. We can all use a little happiness in our busy and often stressful lives. Sometimes we get caught up in the chaos and the problems in our lives and forget to be happy and to remember the little things. That’s why I wanted to share 17 simple and easy ways to get your smile front and center!

  1. Buy yourself a new lipstick- A new lipstick always brightens my day and brings a smile to my face. How about you?
  2. Take a moment and read a chapter of the Bible- I suggest any of the Psalms, Exodus 14, or a chapter in Matthew.
  3. Stop and look at the flowers…literally- Sometimes even a glance at something beautiful like flowers can cause a smile on a hard day.
  4. Write a kind note to someone else- Remember that we aren’t the only ones that have hard days. So to cause a smile, try giving someone else some kindness!
  5. Take a walk and see Gods creation- When life is stressful, go for a walk and take a look around at God’s brilliant and beautiful creation. It always makes me smile.
  6. Have a Netflix marathon of your favorite funny movie or show- There is nothing in life that a Psych marathon or a few episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond can’t fix. Grab a snack, a blanket, and a crack a smile while laughing and enjoying your favorite show.
  7. Buy yourself a new outfit- Sometimes we need to spoil ourselves, so when life is tough go buy a new outfit and smile—show the world you’re in control.
  8. Pay it forward- Buy someone’s coffee or lunch! Spread smiles and happiness to others even when life is hard for us.
  9. Create something- If you paint—paint. If you make cards—make a card. If you write—write! Create something and I bet you will smile.
  10. Read a new book- For me, reading a new book (or a classic favorite) always tends to put a smile on my face.
  11. Take some time to yourself- Go get a manicure, a massage, or go have lunch on your own. Take a few moments to yourself to gather your thoughts and to relax.
  12. Have a worship service in your room- For me, nothing makes me happier than a worship session alone in my car or my room. God’s presence never fails to put life in perspective.
  13. Drink out of a fancy glass- Maybe this won’t make everyone smile, but it does me! There is nothing better than sipping tea out of a fancy wine glass.
  14. Spend time with loved ones- Show your family some love. Crack some jokes and love on each other.
  15. Talk with an accent- Some of the biggest smiles happen because my sister and I talk in fake accents while doing housework.
  16. Be intentional- Smile by being intentional. Love others, be caring, and have fun in life.
  17. Order a Venti instead- treat yourself and order a big coffee on those crazy mornings and smile because at least you have coffee!

Those are just a few ideas of things to do to make you smile. There is always something to smile about even on our darkest days. Jesus is always a reason to smile and have hope. If you don’t know about Jesus or salvation, I’d love to talk to you about it!

What are a few things that make YOU smile?? Let me know in the comments!

A letter to my college self

College. One of the best times in life! You get to be more independent, pick your major, and really find where God is leading you in life. But college isn’t all sunshine and A+’s.

I’ve teamed up with Earnest to write a letter to my college self. What do I have wish I knew? What would I have told myself? What would I have changed?

I want to inspire and encourage all the students in college and those who have started college by telling you some of the things I wish I knew!

Dear freshman Hilary, college is going to be fun but hard. Don’t give up and remember these few things:

1. Apply. Apply. Apply.

If you see a scholarship you MIGHT qualify for apply. Oh this scholarship is only for $100, apply. I’m not sure I’ll be granted any financial aid, apply. Every cent and every dollar counts in college. There is no such thing as a small scholarship in my eyes. I wish I had been even more productive in what I applied for because it would have helped me so much in the end. Applying for aid and scholarships is a long and tiring process…but it’s so worth it.

2. Debt doesn’t define you.

With the economy the way it is and the cost of a college education, you’re LUCKY if you graduate with no debt at all. (Very lucky) Debt is annoying, frustrating, and sadly almost inevitable for many that are taking on the task of getting a college degree. It’s easy to become defined and defeated by that debt. Know this: you’re not the only one. You didn’t fail because you have some debt. That doesn’t mean not to take it seriously, just don’t let it define you. Just be smart and start paying on them the minute you can. Use your money wisely and take advantage of my first point.

3. Think about what books you might want to keep

One of my biggest regrets from college is only renting some of my most vital books. At that moment, the price difference is so extreme you just assume that renting is the best. NOT ALWAYS. If you have a major like mine (Journalism or any writing major) some of those books will be great things to keep in your office or room once you get a job. That way you ca always grab it and refresh your memory on certain things. Because now I am faced with paying a HUGE price just to get those textbooks but I really want to have them in my possession. It will be cheaper in the long run to just buy one that seem like they will have a lot of helpful information that you might want to always keep around.

4. Be prepared to wait for a job

When you get that diploma…you expect to have a job within weeks. You can’t wait for the fancy office and the income. But with the economy how it is…it might take a while. It doesn’t reflect on your talents or experience so don’t take it personally. College doesn’t seem to prepare you for when the job doesn’t come fast. They teach you HOW to do your job…but they don’t prepare you for if that job doesn’t come. Be patient. Apply for every job that semi has to do with your degree and don’t sell yourself short.

What would you tell your college self? Are there tips or tricks you wish you had known while you were working for that degree? Let me know down below!

And make sure you check out Earnest if you have questions about loan refinance or need to do that!

TRUST: a word for 2017

HAPPY NEW YEAR friends and readers! I hope you had a fun and safe NYE and are ready to start a brand new year. *stay tuned for an announcement at the end of the post*

2017. It’s here. It came so fast for me, and maybe you too. I’m sure you’ve heard many, many people say they’re so excited for a new year to start because that means 2016 has ended. I agree, 2016 was a rough year…but for me it was hard because of personal reasons. A whole year and no job. A whole year and still single. Blah…blah…blah.

But that was yesterday; today is a brand new start. Today is the first day of a new year, a fresh start, and a brand new day. I’m not a big fan of resolutions, at least specific ones. So this year I am focusing on a few over all themes and I’ve been praying over a word to sum all my “resolutions” up. Here it is: TRUST.

I believe God is calling me to an even deeper level of trust with him. My 2016 was spent battling trusting God with my future and more. My job, my family, my future husband, my friendships, etc. all of these things require trust in my God.

2017 is about trusting God’s timing and plans that are far greater than my own. I need to fully trust in God’s calling on my life and follow His steps with patience and faithfulness. I need to practice trust and faithfulness on an everyday level. I’m praying that God moves mightily in my life and teaches me more about trust.

Whether I find a job fast or not…I’ll trust. Whether I stay single all year…I’ll trust. Whether my family faces trials…I’ll trust.

Do you have a word for 2017? I’d love to hear it and why you picked that word!

BLOG CHANGES: There is a little change in blog schedules this year. No theme days on the weekends; but an occasional blog will be posted during the weekend!

Local Holiday Night Out

Here in Oklahoma, we have the best of both worlds. We have a growing, fun city with local talent and nightlife but then we also have country and small town feels. I live in a small town but I am only 20 minutes away from the hubbub of Oklahoma City Downtown.

This weekend I headed off with my aunt and my sister for a fun holiday night. We wanted good food, great fellowship, and some Christmas decor and lights. We picked the right night to go, it was clear and a mild temp-perfect for shopping and looking at lights.

We headed to our favorite pizza stop in Midtown (near Downtown), Hideaway Pizza! There is nothing better than a hot fresh pizza on a cool night.

The street that Hideaway is located on is full of brightly lit shops. Most of them are full of sheet lights covering the entire front of each store. Beautiful multicolored, vibrant blue…you name it and they had it! edited1.jpg

Notice the famous “Devon Tower” is the bottom left corner
THEN. We stumbled upon the cutest little area I have ever seen. We found these little Holiday Pop Up shops that were little igloos. Talk about Christmas decorating. They were some of the cutest and well-known downtown and midtown shops in little pop up igloos. There was a music van, a Katiebugs drinks, and a bus that was converted into a bar.

Katiebugs is one of my favorite little food cart, specialty drinks truck. They were at the HP Festival with Butterbeer and they rocked the hot chocolate at these cute little pop ups. Not only did they have fresh and homemade hot chocolate but homemade marshmallows! dsc_0651dsc_0661

The marshmallow’s were jiggly, soft, light, and so yummy! I bought a vanilla bean marshmallow and added it my hot chocolate…I’m still dreaming about it.

Finally, we ended up at the famous red ornaments at the bottom of the Devon Tower, so naturally, we had to hop out of the warm car for a photo! Now, the temp was fine but a big storm was starting to come through and the wind was RIDICULOUS. But the pictures were great nonetheless. edited4

PS, I splurged on this hat at one of the pop up igloos.
I loved this impromptu holiday night spent with some of the best people in my life. We couldn’t have had a better night. What do you like to do around town on a holiday night out?? Let me know!

Christmas gift guide for a makeup lover

Merry {getting closer to} Christmas!! I can’t wait to start off my Christmas blogs with a fun little Christmas gift guide for makeup lovers. We all need a little help finding a perfect gift sometimes, so I thought I would help ya’ll out!

Pretty much- this is a list of things I would buy for myself if I had unlimited funds. But these are also really good sales, sets, or just fun makeup that would be perfect for a girl that loves her makeup and beauty items.

These are in order of lowest to highest price for you convenience. Here we go!

Real Techniques Miracle Diamond Sponge // $9.99

I’ve mentioned this sponge in a Beauty Wish List before and I still love it! RT brushes and sponges are incredible and so well made. Not only is the sponge versatile and useful…it’s adorable. Who wouldn’t want a marbled diamond sponge on their desk or vanity??

Smashbox Light it up: Mascara + Primer set // $22

The Smashbox X-rated mascara is some of my all time favorite mascara to date. I received a sample in my Ipsy and have really been wanting a full size. This set has a full size mascara, a mini size mascara, and a mini photo finish primer. Now I have never used the primer but I am sure it is great. This price is great for all this! This is the same price as the single full size mascara! Great deal and a great mascara.

Too Faced Kissmas // $25

Kissmass has 3 original Melted lipsticks and one of the Melted matte liquid lipsticks. The Melted line is one of my favorite liquid lipstick lines out there. They’re highly pigmented, thin, and easy to apply. The colors are: Melted Fig, Melted Chihuahua, Melted Chocolate in Honey, and the matte is Lady Balls. Those are a purple berry, a pink nude, a brown nude, and a bright red! All of these are deluxe sizes meaning they are smaller than the original. BUT, because the colors are thin and so pigmented, you don’t use much at each application so these sizes should be perfect!

tarte Tartiest Pro Amazonian Clay Palette // $53

I just stumbled upon this beautiful color coordinated palette from tarte. There are 20 beautiful shadows in this palette! The first line across is coppery-brown warm tone shades. The second is plum and berry cool tones. The third line is pinky mauve shades and lastly the final line is emerald-esque shades. All of these give opportunity for many, many different looks within this one palette.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit- Surreal Light // $80

Stay with me…I know that price just jumped up real quick! Let’s just say, this is an option for someone you REALLY love! 🙂 I have fallen in love with this palette. While the price is steep…this also holds a lot of great product. It comes with: finishing powder, highlighter, bronzer, and two blushes. The blushes and bronzer are beautifully marbled with different colors woven into the pressed powder. The packaging is gorgeous: it comes in a white marbled case with a nice size mirror. This would be a great all inclusive face palette. a-sd

What are my makeup lovers out there wanting for Christmas?? Let me know in the comments! XO
